DeLay Calls for Senate Action on Energy IndependenceApril 8, 2002 WASHINGTON - Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Texas) today renewed his call for energy independence as gas prices rise, volatility in the Middle East grows, and Senate Democrat Leader Tom Daschle continues to thwart the will of the majority of senators who support domestic energy exploration in Alaska. Last summer, the House voted overwhelmingly to open the Artic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to exploration, which would have improved Americas energy independence, economic security and national security. The Senate must not squander this unique opportunity to improve Americas energy independence, economic security, and national security, DeLay said. Energy legislation is one of the most important things the Senate can accomplish this Congress. If Tom Daschle wants to avoid further criticism for his obstructionism, the answer is action, not political ads or Web sites. Today Iraq announced a stoppage of all oil exports for a month or until Israel withdraws unconditionally from the West Bank. Iraq is currently the United States 6th largest oil supplier. Saddam Hussein has called on other Arab producers to embargo the West for its support of Israel. Libya has agreed to do so. Opening ANWR would free America from 54 years of oil imports from Saddam Husseins Iraq.
